Lots going on, lots to see and do in Petawawa. Its a sweet little town with great beaches (albeit a little cold in May) nice walking trails, excellent flatwater paddling on the Ottawa, and easy access to Algonquin Park.
To watch the whitewater races, we would recommend two primary viewing spots. Railroad is the largest rapid, and perhaps the most exciting. The Millenium Trail (gravel, multi use) crosses the river just at the top of this rapid, and it would be a great spot to check out the action. It is easy to find, watch the the trail just off of Portage Rd (100 yards past McDonalds). The second location would be at Lovers Rapid, easy walking distance from Centennial Park (Catwalk Rapid). It is an exciting rapid to watch as the water funnels into one large ‘roostertail’ before mashing through a couple of holes. Catwalk will also have alot of paddlers playing in the standing waves. The race essentially follows the Millenium Trail system along the river, so poke around and find yourself a comfy spot to watch the action.
To watch the dragon boat races, come down to the Petawawa Point beach area. The races will take place along the stone wall, and there are plenty of spots to catch the action. If you have a canoe, kayak or small motor boat consider taking in the action from the water. As well, on Sunday there will be Voyageur canoe rides and the whole family is welcome to get out on the water!
Consider taking photos for the day an entering them in the Photo Contest. There will be great prizes. Details are under the Events & Activities page.
For ‘Non-Racing’ Paddlers: In terms of paddling options, if you want to run the river but Class IV is above your comfort level, put in at Hwy 17 (exit Murphy Rd, take your first right, park in the obvious clearing). There is an easy rapid, and some long sections of Class 1 before getting to the main town run. You can walk all the main rapids on the Town Run and paddle the class 2/3 in between.
